In 1917, 69 years into the fight for women’s voting rights, more than 150 suffragists were jailed for picketing the White House. Upon release, the National Woman’s Party presented each suffragist with a silver “Jailed for Freedom” pin shaped like a prison door with a heart-shaped lock. The pins honored their sacrifice and became powerful symbols of freedom and justice.
