David B. Hill became governor of New York in 1885 when Governor Cleveland resigned to become President of the United States. Hill named his cat "Veto" as a clever name due to his regular use of this legislative tool. "Veto" was the only other occupant of the Executive Mansion during Hill's term in office since the governor never married.
